According to the AMA, the family practitioner must base his or her practice on breadth of medical knowledge in a variety of specialties, including internal medicine, pediatrics, OB-Gyn, psychiatry, and surgery. The FP-specialist focused on the needs of families must be especially skilled in listening and delivering services to all age groups.

According to “The History of Family Medicine,” (Millis, 1966, page 33), “the general practitioner of revered memory knew (the) clients…knowledge of his patients, support he gave them, and the trust and confidences his services engendered.” These cited benefits to patients are the reasons families have always preferred a family provider when one is offered.
